Do you want to maximize the profits of your woodworking business? Maybe your skills are limited? Either way, it’s the easy and simple stuff you are looking to build and sell.
While the projects we cover throughout this article aren't too demanding, you will require a decent degree of woodworking knowledge. Then again, with a bit of trial and error, your overall technique as a woodworker will improve vastly, and quickly.
Here we have some great ideas in terms of easy things to make and sell out of wood. These basic DIY woodworking projects won't break the bank in terms of material costs, plus you won't need a plethora of power tools to get started.
Easy Things To Make and Sell
One great thing to make out of wood, something very easy, is a picture frame. Picture frames only require 4 pieces of wood, and if you want to keep things super simple, you can make square picture frames with all pieces the exact same length.
All you have to after cutting them is to make the corners using a simple miter saw, join them together, add some varnish, and you are good to go.
The good thing about selling picture frames is that they are super cheap to make, and you can sell them for a great price. Yes, you can make great money with a picture frame, but when making them yourself, you can also keep the price lower than any of those fancy shops around you. Picture frames are usually quite pricey, but yours don’t have to be.
Chairs, Benches, & Stools
Now, chairs might not be the number one easiest thing to make in the world, but also not the hardest by far. As long as you have the right tools and machines at your disposal, it really should not be a big problem at all.
Perhaps the hardest part of making chairs is finding the right design and colors to use. All you really have to do is figure out how to make the seat, the backrest, and the legs, and then keep repeating it over and over again for each chair.
If a chair is too hard, you might consider doing simple stools, as they don’t even have backrests. On that same note, you could also choose to make benches, ones with backrests, or to make things even easier, ones without backrests.
Whether you make patio chairs or kitchen chairs, children’s stools, or garden benches, there is always a huge market for this kind of stuff, and a bench or chair doesn’t take long to complete either.
Another item you could consider building out of wood and selling for a profit is a simple end table. End tables just have to look nice. They don’t have to be big or come complete with a ton of shelves and cupboards, plus you can make them using scrap wood.
Of course, you do want to give it a nice finish, but none the less, a small end table can be made in about half a day, and you don’t have to use expensive lumber either.do 4 legs, a top, and maybe a shelf below, slap on some varnish, and you’ve made a nice little end table that you can sell for a cool $100.
Kids toys are also a great way to go, mainly because the selection is so huge. You can make a simple block race car, some building blocks, or anything in between. Young kids don’t require super elaborate and high tech toys, just as long as they look good, and maybe have a moving part.
A wooden race car is always a go-to option. All you need is a small block of wood, carve it to shape, drill some holes for wheels, stick in the wheels, paint the thing, and you’re good to go. If you are even remotely skilled at woodworking, you should be able to pump these out like clockwork.
Probably one of the simplest and easiest things you can make out of wood to sell is the good old birdhouse. Birdhouses consist of 4 walls, a floor, a roof, an opening in the front, and a little perch for a bird to sit on. In the grand scheme of things, besides a picture frame, this might just be the number one easiest thing to make.
The cool thing about birdhouses is that they are highly customizable too, so you can add your own flair to them. Moreover, you don’t even need to use expensive lumber to make them either. Some decent looking scrap wood will do just fine for this.
Flower Box Planter
Yet another super easy thing you can make out of wood to sell for a profit is the planter, that or a flower box. All you need to do for this is to make a base and 4 walls. Yeah, they have to be sturdy enough to hold in a bunch of soil and plants, but that is about it.
It’s another one of those things that can be made out of cheap spare wood, something that takes mere hours to complete, and something that can then be sold for a big profit. The garden and landscaping market is big, and if something looks nice, people are willing to pay a heck of a lot of cash for it.
Coat racks are also relatively simple to make. All you need to make is a pole with feed and some hooks on top to hang coats and hacks.
Now, it might be a bit harder than some other DIY woodworking projects, because there are some curves involved, but when compared to other projects you could be doing, it’s still pretty simple and straightforward.
Utensils are something else which are relatively simple to make, not to mention that they are small and repeatable, so they don’t take long to make, and you can keep pumping them out one after the other.
You can make ladles, spoons, knives, forks, salad prongs, and anything in between.
The beauty about making utensils is that there are so many options to go with, none of which are very hard, and people are always willing to pay good money for a matching wooden kitchen utensil set.
Something else which is quite easy to make is a basic dog house. Ok, so there are dog houses out there which have multiple levels and a bunch of bells and whistles, but that is not what we are talking about.
All we mean here is a simple dog house with 4 walls, a floor, and a roof, with an opening in the front.
You could even add some legs and a ramp in the front to make sure that the dog house is off the ground. You really only need a few pieces of lumber for this, and making the dog house involves nothing more than some super simple measuring, cutting, and nailing.
There’s also the fact that most people are willing to spend quite a bit of money on their pets.
Yes, there are of course plenty of other ideas you can go with here. Once you get some experience under your belt, making anything out of wood is not all that difficult.
Sure, some stuff is more intricate than others, but practice makes perfect. Just keep in mind that you might want to start off this stuff that is mostly straight and has limited curves and detail work, at least if you are looking for simple and easy.
